Oxford Vaccine Centre PPI Group

Patient and Public Involvement (PPI) in research, is defined as research carried out ‘with; or ‘by’ the public, rather than ‘for’, ‘to’ or ‘about them’.

There are two fundamental reasons why we want your help:

1. Because it is recognised that PPI can lead to better research.

The idea here is that the quality, relevance and impact of research improves by including end recipients like you.

2. Because it is a core democratic principle that people who are affected by research have a right to have a say in what and how publicly funded research is undertaken.

The National Institute of Health Research (NIHR), which is the Department of Health’s means of funding medical and social care research, encourages all research projects it funds to have active public involvement right from the start.
