The Jenner Institute is a partnership between the University of Oxford and The Pirbright Institute. The Pirbright Institute (TPI) is a veterinary research institute which is part of the UK Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC). It is a unique national centre that works to contain, control, and eliminate viral diseases of animals through its fundamental and applied research programmes.

The research undertaken at The Pirbright Institute is focussed on viral diseases of livestock and poultry, though some of the viruses are also zoonotic, ie. causing disease in people. The Institute engages in fundamental, strategic and applied research in a number of overlapping disciplines, including entomology, epidemiology, genetics, genomics, immunology, mathematical biology, molecular and structural biology, proteomics and virology.

Human-veterinary parallel vaccine development

There are several advantages to the parallel development of vaccines against human and veterinary diseases. Research advances and new technologies employed in human vaccine research can often be successfully transferred to veterinary vaccine research, and vice versa.

The Jenner Institute's Human Influenza researchers, based at the University of Oxford, are currently collaborating closely with the Avian Viral Diseases team at The Pirbright Institute, with the aim of developing a universal flu vaccine for humans, and an improved avian flu vaccine.
