Principal areas of research Biography In the context of vaccinology, Professor Shirley led a research team that derived uniquely attenuated (precocious) lines from all seven species of Eimeria from the chicken and played a major role in the commercialisation of the subsequent “Paracox” vaccines for the control of coccidiosis. Around 1000 million doses are now sold annually worldwide. He played a lead role in the formation of an international consortium that sequenced the 60Mb genome of Eimeria tenella and in ongoing work to identify protective antigens of E. maxima through a novel genetics-led approach that is showing remarkable potential. In 1989 he received the Tom Newman International award for Poultry Science and in 2004 a Research Medal from the Royal Agricultural Society of England.
